Car 3D Scanning: Shiny Paint and All
Our car 3D scanning service turns a car or automotive part into usable data, an editable CAD model or a printed replacement, even on the gloss paint and chrome that defeat cheaper scanners. Engineer-reviewed quote in 2 hours, from £50.
A UK car 3D scanning service that digitises a car part into usable data, and if you need it a printed replacement, engineer-reviewed and dispatched from Poole.
Car 3D scanning for restorers, modifiers, garages and owners who need a physical car part turned into something digital, most often to remake a trim, bracket, badge or panel that is broken, worn or no longer made. Want that scan rebuilt into an editable model and printed? That is our reverse engineering service, and it links back to the full 3D scanning service. Need parts printing rather than scanning? See 3D printed car parts.

What we scan on cars
From a small trim clip to a full body panel. Post the part in, or we bring the scanner to the car for anything too big or too fixed to move.
Trim, badges & clips
Interior and exterior trim, badges and fixings long out of production.
Brackets & fittings
Mounts, housings and mechanical fittings with no drawings left.
Panels & body
Wings, valances and body sections captured on-site where they sit.
Modification parts
New parts modelled to the real body so they fit the actual car, not a drawing.
Shiny paint is exactly what a cheap scanner cannot read
Gloss paint, chrome and polished metal scatter the light a scanner needs, so a hobby scanner returns holes and noise on the very surfaces a car is covered in. That is not a reason to give up on the part. It is the reason to use a professional service.
We read shiny and dark surfaces with a light, washable scanning spray or a few reference dots, then capture clean geometry the DIY route cannot get. The spray wipes off; the scan is faithful.
On matt and textured parts the EinScan Rigil works markerless. On gloss, chrome and glossy-black it gets the spray or dots. Either way, every critical fit feature is hand-measured alongside the scan, because that dimension decides whether the reproduction fits.

How car scanning works with us
Getting a car part digitised shouldn't be complicated. Four steps:
- 1
Send a photo or the part
A clear photo through the quote form, or post the part in. For a fixed panel we come to the car.
- 2
We scan and measure
We capture the geometry in-house, spraying gloss surfaces where needed, and hand-measure the critical fit features.
- 3
We turn the scan into your output
A mesh, an editable STEP model, or a printed replacement, whichever you asked for, confirmed with you first.
- 4
You get the file, the part, or both
Keep the model to re-order and modify, take the finished part, or both. The geometry stays yours.
A hobby scanner, or a professional car scan?
Where a cheap scanner gets you, and where a professional service is worth it:
| Your situation | Hobby scanner | 3DPE car scan |
|---|---|---|
| Gloss paint, chrome or glossy-black surface | Holes and noise; the surface will not read | Read cleanly with washable spray or dots |
| A part that has to fit the real car | Guessed from a rough mesh | Critical features hand-measured, not assumed |
| Turn the scan into an editable CAD model | You rebuild it yourself in CAD | Our reverse engineering delivers a clean STEP |
| Make the finished part | You source printing separately | Printed in-house, FDM or SLA, in one place |
Case study: scanning a jet ski to fit custom modifications

A vehicle with no drawings, and modifications that had to fit exactly
The part: a customer's jet ski, with no drawings for the bodywork. The problem: they wanted modifications that had to fit its real, curved geometry first time. What we did: scanned it on the EinScan Rigil, spraying the glossy surfaces to read cleanly, then modelled the modification against the real scan. The result: parts designed to the vehicle's actual geometry, not to a measurement that might be out. The same approach fits a car body.

Why send your car scan to 3D Printing Express
Four things about how this workshop runs a car scan job.
Gloss paint is our normal, not our problem
The exact surfaces cheap scanners fail on are the ones we scan every week, properly.
Genuinely local
Bournemouth and Poole. Bring the part in, or we bring the scanner to the car on-site.
A 2-hour engineer-reviewed quote
A real engineer reads every enquiry and quotes within 2 hours. Not a form-bot.
The file stays yours
Ask for the mesh or the STEP model and keep it: re-order or modify the part later.
Got a car part that needs digitising?
Send a photo or post us the part, and an engineer will review it and quote within 2 hours, gloss paint and all. There is a £50 minimum order, and one scan is a normal order here.
