Built for Bristol

Bristol's an engineering city. So are we.

From Brunel's iron suspension bridges to Filton's Concorde and Airbus wing assembly, Bristol has always been a UK engineering centre. Modern Bristol runs on aerospace at Filton, creative studios from Aardman down, and research labs at the University of Bristol and UWE Bristol. We supply the engineering-grade FDM composites — PA12-CF, PA6-CF, PPS-CF, UL94 V-0 — that the local FabLabs and 3D-print shops don't usually stock.

Material guide · for Bristol engineers

Why PA12-CF and UL94 V-0 matter for Bristol aerospace work

Most consumer 3D print shops run PLA and PETG, which are great for visual prototypes but lack the stiffness, heat tolerance and dimensional accuracy that aerospace prototyping at Filton actually needs. Carbon-fibre PA12 (PA12-CF) is a chopped-fibre composite that prints on FDM machines but delivers tensile strengths around 95 MPa · genuinely structural.

UL94 V-0 is the flame-retardant rating most aviation cabin components need. Standard PLA fails this; specialist V-0 ABS and modified PETG variants pass. We stock both. If you're prototyping a cabin bracket or a sensor housing that has to clear safety review, the material matters before the geometry.

When you send a brief, tell us the application context · we'll suggest the right composite, flag any printability constraints, and ship a test sample first so you can verify before the full run commits.

PA12-CF

Carbon-fibre composite · ~95 MPa tensile, 0.2% shrinkage. Aerospace prototyping default.

UL94 V-0

Flame-retardant grades · self-extinguishing within 10s of flame removal. Aviation cabin spec.

PET-CF

Carbon-fibre PET · alternative to PA12-CF, lower moisture absorption, cheaper.

Why us, not a local Bristol shop

Three reasons Bristol engineers use a Dorset workshop

01

Engineering composites in stock

Bristol's FabLabs, university makerspaces and small print shops stock PLA, PETG, sometimes ABS. PA12-CF, PA6-CF, PPS-CF, PET-CF, PETG-rCF08 and UL94 V-0 flame-retardant are usually order-specific. We keep them in stock and ship the same week.

02

Engineer-reviewed quote in 6 hours

We don't run an algorithm-only instant quote. We review every brief for printability before pricing · orientation, wall thickness, support strategy, material fit. Issues get flagged before printing, not after.

03

Same delivery speed, broader material range

DPD next-day to Bristol arrives by 10:30am · the same window as a local shop. The difference is what arrives · engineering-grade composites that most local Bristol shops can't print.

Brief checklist

Before you send your Bristol brief

Five things in your brief mean a faster, more accurate quote and a printable file first time. None of these are dealbreakers if missing · we'll ask · but the more you tell us upfront, the quicker you'll have a sample part on your bench.

1

What does the part do?

One sentence on use case · "it's a bracket holding a 200g PCB inside an aerospace test rig" beats "I need a bracket" every time. Tells us load, environment, tolerance.

2

File or photo · whatever you have

STEP and STL are easiest. Sketch, scan, or a photo of a broken part also work · we reverse-engineer in-house if no CAD exists.

3

Quantity

1 prototype, 10 iteration units, 100-unit batch, 1,000-unit production run · changes the print strategy and the unit price. Bracket batches over 50 unlock batch pricing.

4

Deadline (if any)

Event date, demo day, regulatory deadline. If you tell us, we'll quote the lead time honestly · we'd rather decline than miss a date.

5

Material preference (optional)

If you know you want PA12-CF, tell us. If not, describe the use case and we'll recommend the right material in the quote.

Quote transparency

What's in a Bristol quote

Every quote we send to a Bristol customer comes back with the same structure · no upsells, no hidden fees, no algorithmic "best guess". An engineer reviews the file, prices the work and shares any flags before you commit.

Line item 1

Material + print time

Total filament used in grams + total print hours. PA12-CF runs slower than PLA but uses less infill for the same strength. We show both so you can see the trade-off.

Line item 2

Post-processing

Support removal, sand, paint, assemble · only what you've asked for. Each finish has a separate line. No "premium finishing" mystery surcharge.

Line item 3

Delivery to Bristol

DPD Next Day to BS postcode addresses · fixed price by parcel weight. Quoted upfront so you can compare against Royal Mail Tracked if you'd rather wait.

Line item 4

Printability flags

If the engineer spots a thin wall, a support-trap or a tolerance risk, we flag it in the quote · with a suggested fix. You decide whether to proceed or revise.

Batch runs of 50+ units automatically include a per-unit price breakdown so you can compare cost-at-scale before committing. VAT is shown separately; no inclusive-of-VAT-without-saying-so.
